The Power of Simplicity November 16 2015, 0 Comments

"Things should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Albert Einstein

                                                                              Paul Klee, Young Moe, 1938

But just what does simplicity mean? Simplicity is not to be confused with simpleness. Simplicity is effortless composition and orderliness with lyrical qualities. Like in a great a painting that has only enough brushstrokes to convey the idea, in which the painter uses just the right amount of color, making it impossible to imagine another stroke or another color without ruining the composition. Great design, whether in paintings or furniture design, shares this quality.

It’s hard work getting to simple. Separating the signal from the noise, seeking the essence of a place or thing. Often we complicate things for the sake of complexity, not because it lends more meaning.

The beauty of this coffee table lies in its simplicity: a simple, clean edge and geometry along with rhythm in the table legs and the contrast of the top against the base.

What does simplicity mean to you?
